"How could I have done better?" As the words hung in the air, he realized their double meaning. She could answer either derivative.

"You seemed confident. You kept control of the situation. You did fine."

"I don't always keep control of the situation, even when I'm confident."

"Oh, really."

That hadn't been a question. "What were you afraid of, Rebekah? I would never have hurt you."

"Good night, Wade. Thanks for taking over for Marco."

"I need an answer to that question."

"I wasn't afraid."

"Rebekah?" He reached to touch her face, and she flinched away. "That movement right there. It's called fear. We talked about it in the presentation. What I don't know is why things were going so well between us, and then the fear came back. Did something happen while I was away?"

The angle of the sun cast her face into shadow. "Don't be silly."

"I'm not," he said softly. "I loved you with every molecule of my being. I thought you felt the same about me. I wasn't prepared for your rejection that night. I've gone through it in my mind a thousand times or more. What did I miss? How could I have been so wrong about your feelings for me?"

"Wade, I..."

"Yes?"

"Can we not talk about this?"

He forced a smile. "We've already tried that route. It didn't work."
